Yeah, the timbale-like intro thing...

Maybe it's not a lick...but I call it one...It's a sticking pattern, he just plays it in a groove...he plays it between hh and snare too on a different track...I'll get back to you on details. He plays it wrong on his own video...

    here it is(accents are bold):

    LRRL RLRR RLRL RRLR

left hand on snare(snares off- accents are "ping shots"), right hand on rim

Yeah cjbdrm, the intro is gorgeous, and I had no idea that was JR on kit.

    Yeah.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Rodge, here's the bit I guess you're talking about. I've transcribed it too Interesting thing. The whole thing is at 55bpm, and it stays perfect with my rhythm watch, except the fill. The fill is exactly at 57bpm throughout and then back into the tune, we're at 55 again.

Don't know what you're referring to off the top of my head. But if you post a clip of the lick, and I'll write it out for everyone.

    Hey Rudy,

Thanks Man, it's true that it's more a huge breack that a lick.

But here some work for you if you want and here it's a lick, the famous Jeff Porcaro's lick on the incredible Boz Scaggs's track, "I Don't Hear You".

Like the M. Bolton song, don't listen this one in your car if you don't want to have a car accident when the ENORMOUS break arrive !!! :-)

Keith Jarret says that true improvisation just means you don't know what's going to come next... next.... next... next....

I hear Keith play some corny stuff during his solos, but that's just what he's feeling and hearing. I like that. He's not holding back his corny side. Just lets if flow out. I believe, If one can get past his vox, and perhaps his personality traits, then Keith is the strongest, melodic improvisor that I've heard in my lifetime. Jack D is right up there...

Licks are good to learn and then forget asap....

I like the lick players too, but I start predicting too much if I hear them a couple of times.

I just saw Robin Williams on Bravo. The guy KILLED and his imprvosational skills are second to NONE...AMAZING stuff he pulled off. He took a scarf from the crowd and played four different characters, one right after another with such depth.

He was questioned on how his mind works so quickly and he did another improv to answer. Yet, what looks so "in the moment" has a tremendous depth of technique and pratice behind it. He repeatedly spoke of the teachers who influenced him and his focus on constantly learning.

Point--improvisation can appear to be something with little reflective thought...and this is probably true, but beneath the surface is a tremendous amount of effort to allow one to "fly through the air" without a net. Williams spoke over and again how he would take risks and push the boundaries (his peers say he is more fearless than just about anyone) early on in grade school...after 30 years of this, he makes it look effortless. And, like us all, he cloned his favorites early on before developing his own style...in other words, he copied licks.

This whole recording is sweet. Don't miss Jeff on Michael McDonald's "Take It To Heart"--it is a Jeff clinic in groove!!!
